If you support the War On Iraq, you need to see these pictures...oh wait, now you can't. Censorship bites, and official censorship bites even worse. Why, if the War On Iraq is such a goddamn great war, do we have to cover up the reality that people are DYING and coming home in FLAG DRAPED COFFINS?

The song This Is Not America by David Bowie is going through my head right now as I update this post, 4/23/2004, 12:48AM PDT. The more the George W. Bush Administration drags on, the more my country is becoming less and less like America. However, we still have an election coming November 2nd. I think. I hope.

Another update, 1:03AM PDT: http://www.thememoryhole.org/ is back up again. And the coffin pix are still up, in defiance of the DoD's new policy. Good on them. Let's hope it keeps back up.

From the "We could add flower stickers and a Barbie logo" department:

IBM wants to attract more women to their ThinkPad line. Never mind that they make the best damn x86 notebook on the planet. They say that they believe their potential female customers, particularly in Asia, don't like the strictly-business look of their Little Black Notebooks. Come on, the Little Black Dress is a femme classic...the Little Black Notebook isn't? It goes with everything! (set sarcasm mode OFF)

Anyway, IBM is planning on coming up with a line of colorful notebooks geared towards female customers. They might also be secondarily looking at notebook offerings from gamer PC companies like Voodoo and Alienware in this move...considering that the higher-end IBM T41 series ThinkPads already are gaming-ready with some very muscular specs, they would be wise to also market these new, colorful ThinkPads to the LAN party set.

Here's the story:

Well, that History test turned out OK...I got an A, although the score was still not up to my standards. 71/85...thank god for grading on a curve.

I took another test today, and here's my score:

The Dante's Inferno Test has sent you to the First Level of Hell - Limbo!
Here is how you matched up against all the levels:
LevelScore
Purgatory (Repenting Believers)Very Low
Level 1 - Limbo (Virtuous Non-Believers)High
Level 2 (Lustful)Low
Level 3 (Gluttonous)Moderate
Level 4 (Prodigal and Avaricious)Very Low
Level 5 (Wrathful and Gloomy)High
Level 6 - The City of Dis (Heretics)High
Level 7 (Violent)High
Level 8- the Malebolge (Fraudulent, Malicious, Panderers)Moderate
Level 9 - Cocytus (Treacherous)Low

Take the Dante's Inferno Test

Actually Limbo isn't too bad...that's where Dante put people like Socrates and Aristotle and Homer. I could think of worse places to chill for Eternity...talking philosophy with the greats, drinking Ouzo, listening to great tales. First circle of Hell? Nah. Sounds more like Heaven to me.

Tomorrow, I return to school after Spring Break. I return with the realization that I basically pissed away the entire time without doing any work of substance in the interim. Twas ever thus, it seems...I am basically falling back into the habits that resulted in me just bailing on college the first time.

Really thick, rich irony: Thursday I've been invited to the Dean's Reception for all the students with a 3.5 or better GPA for Fall 2003. If you've been following this blog from Slashdot to here, you know that I made straight-As on all the classes I had completed that semester. Trouble is, I also didn't complete Math 112. Which I need to complete. Which I don't have the faintest idea HOW I'm going to get around to completing.

The frustration never stops...

I am having the roughest time getting my mind off of what is currently going on in Iraq and thinking of other things that maybe I have more control over. If you read my Slashdot Journal posts from a year or so ago, you can see that I have never really been for this war, even though I did mention once that I thought Saddam should have been removed from power way back in 1991 during Gulf War I.

By provoking a cleric who is perhaps not popular with the average Iraqi on the street, but who seems to be extremely popular with a segment of Iraqi population which is prone to fall in with those actively fighting the US Occupation forces, (Disaffected teen to young adult males with little or no prospects for upward mobility) we have pissed off the one person we shouldn't have pissed off. Let's look a minute at Mullah Sadr. He is still considered a student rather than a teacher by the Shia muslim clerical establishment in Iraq. He's still quite young by their standards...early 30s. He's loud. But if we hadn't gone on the warpath against him, and just let him publish his screeds in his newspaper, he would have still been marginalized by the mainstream of the Iraqi body politic. What did we do? We gave him instant legitimacy by first cracking down on his newspaper, then by putting a price on his head.

The Saddam-ites of Fallujah are a different kettle of fish entirely. These are the most fanatical of the pro-Saddam camp, a bunch of people who knew damn well what side their bread is buttered on back in the days when Saddam ruled with an iron fist. They see the time ticking down for the Occupation and the handoff date drawing near. Once the US has handed over control of the country to their hand-picked provisional government, a second clock begins ticking, marking the months and days before elections and a truly representational government in Iraq. They know they won't have much of a chance in open elections. So they are raising hell now with the goal of making the US reluctant to hand over power and start the clock ticking to a real Iraqi-run Iraq. If we don't hand over the reins on 6/30, these guys will be able to go "See! We told you so!" and really stir up some shit.

What was bad is now getting worse at lightning speed. I still think that "you break it, you bought it" is the philosophical maxim that is going to have to keep us in Iraq on this dreadful fool's errand until we have stablized things or until things destabilize on the home front enough to force us, hat in hand, to negotiate terms of withdrawal like we had to do in Vietnam. We cannot simply walk away from this mess, because it is our creation. Nixon had one up over Bush The Younger in that he cared that people looked on him as a statesman in foreign policy, no matter what he was thought of at home for his electoral dirty tricks. Bush The Younger, like fellow Southern "man of action" Rhett Butler, frankly, my dear, doesn't give a damn about what posterity thinks of him.

No amount of character assassination of those attempting to get the truth out about George W. Bush will silence every critic. Bush The Younger's only hope is that people's fear of the unknown while in a wartime footing will overcome their anger at being drawn into what is looking like a bloodier and bloodier conflict that we started unilaterally under false pretenses. Even some Reaganites are saying that this was a mistake.

I ask anew the question I asked almost a year ago in my Slashdot journal. Who's the worse liar, someone who lies about extramarital sex, or someone who sends men and women to die in a war started on false pretenses? The answer was clear when I posed it, the answer is even clearer now as the body bags start to stack up.

OK, I'm sold. AirAmerica Radio officially rocks. It is nice to hear a different voice on talk radio, even if I have to listen to the voice as an internet stream because the AM outlet in Los Angeles, KBLA 1580, has a piss-poor signal that doesn't reach into the San Fernando Valley.

It's worth a listen. I understand that mplayer can handle Real streams under Linux, and if you don't want RealPlayer spyware deluxe sleazing up your Windows box, RealAlternative works beautifully as a helper program under Mozilla. If you're a Mac person, alas and alack, you're stuck with RealPlayer for Macintosh for the time being. I think that mplayer works under MacOS X but you have to compile it for Darwin and if my memory serves me right you also have to run X11 for MacOS X.

Oh yeah...one last bit. Richie got back home safely. The 3 gigs Saccharine Trust did in Britain were by and large successful.

The fool's errand continues...I am just sick to my stomach by the way things are going in Iraq. It really is beginning to look like Vietnam all over again.

We are going to have a lot of 'splainin' to do to the international community after all this is said and done.

In better news, the people of Inglewood, CA told Wal*Mart to go fuck themselves. The measure put before the voters to basically bum-rush the Inglewood City Council and force the approval of the first Wal*Mart superstore in California was voted down by a 2:1 ratio. I'm sure that this will not be the last attempt by Wal*Mart to bully a low-income community into accepting their presence, but it's good that this time they lost.

OK, so how am I doing since Richie left for Britain?

I suppose I'm alright. I am definitely not enjoying having to get around by bus everywhere I go. The Los Angeles MTA (formerly the LA RTD) has always been a sucky kludge, and the buses are poorly maintained and always crowded. I don't mind the Red Line; (subway) Blue, Green and Gold Lines; (light rail) or Metrolink. (trains, aka heavy rail) But the MTA buses are horrifyingly bad.

I've been walking as many places as I possibly can. I was doing that anyway when Richie was here but I'm doing that as a matter of course now. I have also been trying to get as many workouts in as possible at LA Valley College Fitness Center before they close down after Sunday morning for Spring Break. I gave it a miss this morning because I needed to sleep in, and Thursday because I just wanted to go home after classes rather than sit around and kill time between 12:45, when my last class lets out, and 4:00, when the Fitness Center opens. I don't know how I'll be due to the time change tomorrow so I'll take it as it comes.

Yeah, I'm missing Richie terribly. Some people need to have their space, have time away from their significant others. In the past 17 years we've been living together, 16 1/2 of them as a married couple, Richie and I have found that sort of thing to not be enjoyable at all. Invariably we wind up dragging around in the dumps while we're away from each other. I haven't been cooking much for myself because it's just such a hassle to cook for just one person. I've spent more money than I should eating fast food, although I have been being quite careful as to what fast food I do eat. I tend to stay up later than I normally do, and waking up earlier than I normally do.

There is also that fear about overseas travel now. What if some schmuck decides to blow up another airplane in the name of Allah? What if Richie's on it? Before 9/11/2001 and 3/11/2004 these sorts of worries were just my anxieties spiraling out of control. Now it's a worry about something very real. I won't be "back to myself" until Richie's safely on the Tarmac at LAX. It's fucked that life is like this now.
